Craig Freese is part of a group of men against gender-based violence and was among a crowd outside court.

"For us as men, we feel we need our voices to be heard and we need to stand up against the social ills that are happening in our communities on a daily basis.

"Time for being quiet and silent is up. We can no longer be silent about this social ill and injustice. We need to educate our kids. We as men need to be examples to our sons and nephews and let them know it is wrong for any man to lay his hand on any woman."

Local resident Brunetta Pillay says she's at court because Rawlins' story resonates with her.
