SIU plans to recover over R500m from irregular PPE contacts
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) aims to recover over half-a-billion rand from personal protective equipment contracts that were found to be irregular.
Its report into Covid-19 procurement corruption was released on Tuesday.
According to the report, the SIU has already recouped over R34 million.
The unit says 2 803 contracts or 62 percent of the 4 549 finalised investigations, were irregular.
It says 45 matters, amounting to a combined value of R2.1 billion, have been enrolled with the Special Tribunal.
Twenty-three of the matters involve the KwaZulu-Natal Social Development Department's procurement of blankets and PPE.
In August 2020, an investigation by the KZN Treasury revealed that emergency procurement processes were flouted when purchasing the blankets and PPE.
In Tuesday's SIU report, the unit says nationally, 224 officials have been referred for disciplinary action, while 386 matters have been referred to the NPA.
