Sentencing proceedings in the Sindiso Magaqa murder case began in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

Magaqa was allegedly targeted for exposing corruption within the municipality.

On Monday, Sibusiso Ncengwa asked the court not to impose a harsh sentence on him.

He admitted to shooting the 35-year-old in 2017 and claimed the hit was ordered by the late uMzimkhulu mayor.

His lawyer, Andrew Matlamela, argued that while a life term is standard in murder cases, his client is remorseful and should be shown leniency.

" Eight years must be taken into account because if it is not, he will suffer twice. This court today will know who the instigators are. Mr Ncengwa fully and honestly disclosed what happened.

“In conclusion, I have proposed this order that on count one, the accused be sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, of which five years is suspended for five years. With regards to counts three through five, I proposed five years’ imprisonment for attempted murder."
