Sibanye to engage with platinum miners to avert another strike
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Sibanye-Stillwater management says they will enter into wage negotiations with unions in the platinum sector as the company seeks to avert another strike.
This follows the wage agreement reached in the gold sector on Friday.
Workers at Sibanye-Stillwater's gold operations downed tools earlier this year after the two parties failed to agree on wage increases.
The new deal will see miners earn R1 000 extra in the first year, a R900 increase in the second year and a R750 increase in the third year.
Miners and artisans will receive a 5% increase.

Sibanye spokesperson James Wellsted said they want to avert a strike at their platinum mines.
"We will be engaging in wage discussions towards the end of this month with unions at PGM operations. We hope to avert a strike again.
Employees have been affected at gold operations and we don't want to see that being repeated.
"We hope we will have a constructive engagement with unions, and we will not allow being intimidated or coerced into accepting above inflation demands. Because it does impact the sustainability of our operations."
