Sharks board workers revise wage demand
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Workers at the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board have reduced their wage demand in the hope that the employer will come to the party.
The South African Liberating Public Sector Workers Union, or SALIPSWU, says it is now asking for a 13 percent increase.
Their initial demand was a 15 percent pay hike and a R3,000 housing allowance. The employer is offering ten percent.
The union has also now brought down the housing allowance to R1,000.
The union's Thami Gumede workers are battling to survive after recent increases in VAT and petrol - among other things.
"The lowest paid worker is taking home, not calculating deductions, R6,100. As you know, petrol went up - everything went up. Nobody can survive on a salary of R6,100," said Gumede.
Last week, the Sharks Board said all shark safety gear had been removed from protected beaches for the duration of the strike.
Beachgoers are being advised to adhere to all lifeguards recommendations and instructions at all beaches along the KZN coastline.
