Several horses pulled from Nkandla May race

The National Council of SPCAs says it had to pull a number of horses out of a racing event in Nkandla recently after inspectors raised concerns about the animals’ welfare.
The Nkandla May traditional horse race was held in northern KZN, over a week ago.
Animal inspectors monitoring the event found a number of horses in poor condition.
The council says that's when its vets stepped in.
A horse found to be lame and which belongs to the village chief was removed from the race.
Spokesperson Keshvi Nair says they raised other welfare concerns with event organisers about horses being overridden and the installation of unsuitable offloading ramps.
"The reason the SPCA opposes horse racing, in general, is there is often cruelty found from the way these horses are trained, to the way they are raced and to what is used in the race.
"We also remove this like sjambok, whips and these items should not be sued on horse or any animal."
