They are among more than 60 suspects who appeared in the local magistrate's court on Wednesday, facing a range of charges, including being in the country illegally.

The women were attacked while shooting a music video at an old mine dump last month.

Gauteng NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjondonwana says seven others linked to the rapes are expected to be charged on Thursday.

"The prosecutor first had to go through the contents of the docket and satisfy herself. But there is prima facie evidence.

"Hence the 14 accused from the 64 accused that appeared in court are now facing charges ranging from multiple counts of rapes, robberies, aggravating circumstances and sexual assault."

The incident sparked protests in areas including Kagiso, where residents called for an end to illegal mining.

ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe showed up at the Kagiso shutdown last week, telling residents the safety of undocumented foreign nationals in the country can no longer be guaranteed.

Speaking earlier today, International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor said no one should be threatening people from other countries.

"I think that is absolutely wrong and it is something all of us as South Africans should reject. I believe that the government is taking steps to ensure that we stop any activity that seeks to harm persons who are foreign nationals."
