Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Sentencing proceedings have begun in the case against the man accused of killing MUT student Xolile Mbatha.

The 23-year-old electrical engineering student was stabbed to death in July at the Ark Royal student residence in Durban's South Beach.
A warrant of arrest was issued for her partner, Bongani Mlambo, the following month.

Mlambo pleaded guilty to Mbatha's murder last month in the Durban High Court.
KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says he was back in court on Wednesday for pre-sentencing arguments.
"The State is now trying to convince the court that the murder committed was actually premeditated, hence asking for a higher sentence when it comes to the sentencing proceedings."
