"The suspects saw us and saw we were tracking them; meanwhile, we were on our way to something else and they started to open fire on us," says Fidelity Security's Johann Pretorius.
He says the suspects shot their tyres, forcing them to lose control of their vehicle. It veered off the southbound route.

"Obviously, when they started shooting at us, we pursued with a shootout, but luckily not me or my members were hurt."
IPSS Medical Rescue, who was at the scene, says the N2 is open; however, there is some obstruction by law enforcement vehicles there.
The scene remained active by mid-morning on Friday.
