School uniform debacle: SGB denies wrongdoing

The school governing body at HP Ngwenya Primary School in Chesterville, west of Durban, says pupils will not be sent home for wearing the wrong school shirt.

Earlier this week it was alleged that pupils at the school were only allowed to wear a specific branded shirt - which is R15 more expensive than the yellow option many parents have already bought for their children.

Parents said the school only allows for pupils to wear the lighter option.

A concerned parent told Newswatch that her child was told she would be kicked out for wearing the wrong uniform.

Maxwell Mnikathi, who is a teacher at the school and a member of the SGB - says the school's uniform policy stipulates the correct shirt must be worn by all pupils.

He's urging parents who can't afford the correct shirt to communicate this with the school.

"They should not take anything that their children tell them. They must come to school and report it and then the school will take up the matter and resolve it. They have never been kicked out of school - they are always being allowed until they get the right uniforms," he said.
