Parents say the HP Ngwenya Primary School in Chesterville, west of Durban, only allows pupils to wear a specific branded yellow shirt - costing them much more than other options.

One parent has told Newswatch that children have been told they'll be kicked out of the school if they wear any other yellow shirt.

The department's Muzi Mahlambi says they are intervening because children cannot be excluded from classes because of uniform.

"All learners must be at school for the minimum of seven hours. So you can't then have a learner that is kicked out of school on the basis of where they bought their uniform; it's a matter that we will investigate and intervene in the schools - so that there is more teaching and learning," he said.

The school's governing body will meet with parents regarding the issue, tomorrow.
