SAUS: Nsfas proposal for funding will leave many out in the cold
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Union of Students (SAUS) has appealed to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) to rethink its proposal on the module pass rate for students on the financial aid scheme.
Nsfas wants to amend the funding requirements.
It's suggested students pass 75% of their modules from next year to keep qualifying for funding in 2023.
This is an increase from the current 50%.
The student union wants a review of these proposed guidelines, which it feels won't be fair.
Spokesperson Yandisa Ndzoyiya believes the changes will leave many disadvantaged students out in the cold.
"The implementation of the portioned rule is at the wrong time. Rather what I was saying is that for Nsfas to encourage students to pass, of which we are saying that's what the portioned rule is meant for.
"They must introduce incentives for the students that are passing well instead of increasing the portioned rule because as much as the portioned rule will promote academic excellence, it will also exclude some students in the process.
"So to make sure we don't exclude students, let us promote academic excellence to increase and make sure that we are accommodate our students by keeping the 50 plus one portioned rule.”
