Eskom hopeful of some load shedding respite from Thursday evening
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
If all goes according to plan, load shedding will be suspended from 9pm on Thursday.
Eskom CEO André de Ruyter says the power cuts will then resume at 5am on Friday morning and be downgraded to stage 1.
"We will lift load shedding tonight at 9 o'clock to give everybody a bit of a respite during the evening hours.
"We will, however, resume load shedding at Stage 1 by 5 o'clock tomorrow [Friday] morning, which at this time is expected to continue until 9 o'clock tomorrow night."
De Ruyter says they will confirm this plan by 4pm on Thursday afternoon.
He says it would be dangerous, at this point, to speculate on whether sabotage is to blame for some unit breakdowns.
They will be beefing up security.
"We have dispatched a forensic team to sites. They will be investigating. We will also be deploying additional security to sites in order to ensure that we can protect our assets.
"But when you have three simultaneous units trip like this, it certainly does arouse suspicion.
He'll address the media at 9am again on Friday morning.
