Drivers embarked on an early morning strike blocking several highways and busy routes around the city centre over the non-payment of last month's salary.

Last month drivers caused a gridlock in the city after they were not paid their December salaries and bonuses.

Acting Provincial Secretary for Satawu Dumisani Nyawo says the agreement they reached at the time was short term.

"The short-term agreement was for December. We did not reach a stage where we say it won't happen again that's why we are saying it is important to meet with the municipality including the service provider not to have this each an every month," he said.

eThekwini Metro Police meanwhile are monitoring traffic around the city.

UPDATE: N2 - traffic on Northbound carriageway near old Durban airport and heading from Toti has been cleared. Free-flowing traffic on M4, Durban-bound. While Queen Nandi Drive and Malandela Road in KwaMashu has been cleared.
