Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni made this announcement on Thursday during a media briefing on the previous day’s cabinet meeting.

She explained that the one-month extension is to allow the remaining 800,000 beneficiaries more time to complete the transition.

“The deadline for SASSA beneficiaries to swap their SASSA gold card for the Postbank black card has been extended to 30th April 2025 to allow SASSA and the Department of Social Development to complete the migration of the outstanding beneficiaries,” she said.

Ntshavheni also announced that the Postbank had fulfilled eight of the nine South African Reserve Bank requirements for paying social grants, with the final requirement being the physical replacement of the cards.

The original deadline for replacing the cards was last Thursday, following an earlier extension from 28 February.

“All those who have not yet swapped their cards can visit the relevant Post Offices, local retailers, or SASSA offices. If they don’t do this or if their parents or elders don’t change the card, they will still receive their social grants but will need to visit SASSA offices to collect them,” the minister said.

On Monday, Postbank confirmed it has assisted nearly 1.4 million out of 2.8 million social grant beneficiaries in replacing their old gold cards with the new black cards.

Postbank spokesperson Bongani Diako added that beneficiaries can also visit selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, or Boxer stores to swap their cards.

"All the beneficiaries who have not yet collected their cards will be paid their grants with just their IDs at any Post Office branch across the country," Diako stated.
