SA's Covid-19 death toll continues to climb

A further 317 people succumbed to Covid-19 related illnesses on Thursday, pushing the total fatalities in South Africa to 78 694.

In its latest data released on Thursday evening, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 13 672 new Covid-19 cases.
This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 652 652.
The institute says the increase represents a 19.9% positivity rate.

The majority of new cases are from KwaZulu-Natal (29%), followed by Western Cape (27%).
The Eastern Cape accounted for 11% and Gauteng accounted for 12%.
There has been an increase of 536 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
A total of 13 940 people are currently admitted in both public and private facilities.
