SA’s case against Israel described as ‘bold, proactive’

South Africa has been lauded for taking a bold and proactive step on behalf of humanity by approaching the International Court of Justice against Israel.

Our country wants the UN's top court to order a halt on Israel's military action in Gaza calling the acts against the Palestinian people- genocidal.

It's asking the court to provide urgent provisional measures to protect those still left in Gaza.

The Peace Palace in The Hague will on Friday hear Israel’s oral arguments- after South Africa's legal team presented its case on Thursday.

The Palestinian Authority’s assistant minister for foreign affairs Ammar Hijazi, spoke to the media after Thursday’s proceedings.

"Palestinian leadership will not relent until our rights of returned freedom and independence are achieved. Humanity is at a crossroads; the case before the ICJ is a test to the international system; it is a moment of naked truth and an opportunity to provide hope to humanity at a time when it's sorely needed. Leaders have historic responsibility and their actions will be judged by history."

Yesterday, Britain's Vaughan Lowe KC, for South Africa, presented the provisional measures requested by our country in this case.

“Israel may say that it will comply with all its obligations of the genocide convention, and the orders from the court are not necessary. In previous cases, the court has held that such unilateral statements do not remove the risk of irreparable prejudice; in this case, one reason for doubting the ethics of any such unilateral undertaking is Israel's apparent inability to see it has done anything wrong."
