SARS to auto-assess taxpayers
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
SARS says it will be auto-assessing some South African taxpayers from next month.

The revenue service is going this route because of the coronavirus pandemic.
SARS's spokesperson, Siphithi Sibeko says taxpayers need not worry about their documents, as their banks and employers will provide all the required information.
Sibeko says taxpayers will be notified by SMS once they've been assessed.
"When the taxpayer received that information, they could either look at what has been assessed and accept it," he said.

He adds that when accepted and there is a refund to taxpayers, it gets paid to them in 72 hours and if they are not happy with the assessment they can then go into e-filing.
He says those who weren't able to get assessed will be able to visit branches from September until the end of November - but strictly by appointment only.
"There is an appointment system in order to try and avoid people congesting our offices and during this difficult times of covid-19, the digital platforms that we have created would be of massive benefit to the taxpayers."
