The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board says much of the activity continues on the south coast, between Pennington and Bazley beach.

The board's Greg Thompson says not that many nets of sardines have been brought in over the past few days.

The 2018 season got off to a bumper start earlier this month, giving people hope of a busy sardine run this year.

Although the board says the initial shoals that came up from the Eastern Cape and were netted on the south coast were better than recent years, things have slowed down a bit.

Initial projections were that the sardines would make their way to Durban by this passed weekend.

However, Thompson says Durbanites might have to wait a little longer for its share of the action:

All shark safety gear has been removed from beaches south of Durban, that's from Ansteys beach on the Bluff to Port Edward.

Some city beaches had their shark nets removed in anticipation of the arrival of the shoals, but have since been replaced.

The sharks board is urging beachgoers to check the status of the beaches they head to and to practice caution when entering the water.

The massive shoals of sardines are followed along the coastline by different predators, including sharks, dolphins and Cape gannets.
