Sapu wants return of murder, robbery units
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A police union wants
officers in KwaZulu-Natal to fight fire with fire by re-establishing
specialised units to tackle murders.
The South African Police Union (Sapu) believes it's a crucial tool that would help reduce the high number of killings in the province.
KZN has been rocked by a spate of murders in recent weeks.
On Friday, 10 family members were gunned down in Pietermaritzburg.
Earlier, four people were shot and killed in KwaMashu.
Sapu's Nurse Mdletshe feels the police need a different strategy to curb gruesome crimes.
She says this is why they're proposing a plan that's worked before.

"We cannot rely on a task team because a task team is only meant for only particular incidents. Then after that, it's dissolved.
What about the cases that were opened, if they don't get anything, who follows up? That's why we are calling for the re-establishment of murder, and robbery as well as the firearm unit because those people will be focused on these two issues."
