According to Mkhwanazi, the woman was apprehended after allegedly tipping off her son to flee upon learning that police were pursuing three suspects, believed to be from KwaMashu, north of Durban.

Police have released the names and photographs of the three men.

Mongale was found dead in Lombardy West in Johannesburg, a few hours after she was picked up for a date on Sunday.

On Wednesday, detectives traced the car believed to be linked to the crime to a panel beating shop in Phoenix, north of Durban.

Speaking to the reporters in KwaDukuza on Thursday, Mkhwanazi said officers had been working tirelessly through the night as the investigation intensifies.

"We'll be able to update you once we've got them, and then we will be able to go to court. Only then we can be able to say we've closed the case," said Mkhwanazi.

"So, for now, as we are getting the vehicle and picking up pieces [here] and there, it's still work in progress. We wouldn't want to talk much about it. Unfortunately, the story came out that we have found a vehicle.

"We wish that we didn't have to say that, so that we're able to find those people. But now that they know about it, they're [on] the run, and that makes us to double our efforts again, to try and locate them."
