SAPS destroys R90bn worth of drugs

The South African Police Service has destroyed R90 million worth of drugs in Cape Town.

The drugs were confiscated during various police operations in the Western and Eastern Cape, including at roadblocks.
The narcotics include tik, cocaine and mandrax.
The police's Athlend Mathe says it is the fourth drug destruction for this financial year.
"This financial year alone, we have destroyed close to a billion-rand worth of drugs. In the previous financial year, we destroyed R2 billion worth of drugs."

“It’s important to note that the SAPS embarks on this process on a regular basis, and the drugs that are being destroyed are identified by means of court orders illustrating the finalisation of cases."
In the past three months, police have seized cocaine worth over R200 million in various drug busts at ports of entry.

Two of them were made at the Durban Harbour in October.
