The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in KZN says it's shocked and concerned by the increase in the number of crashes recently, involving minibus taxis.

The taxi association's holding an urgent meeting on Thursday to discuss a way to curb deadly taxi-related road incidents.

Sixteen people lost their lives in a collision between Ulundi and Melmoth on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, 13 family members were killed in a single taxi crash while travelling between Underberg and Bulwer.

SANTACO's Sifiso Shangase says they're compiling a document to submit to the Department of Transport.

"Its a pity that this is a third mini-bus taxi that is involved in such a serious accident whereby a huge number of lives are lost.

"We are saying yes the drivers need to have compulsory training which will be looking at customer care, advanced driving so that we minimise some of these accidents that are taking place.

"Main causes of accidents on the road - could either be the road itself, human error - which could be the driver himself or the vehicle. Drivers have got to undergo training before they come and drive for us."
