Sanef vs BLF ruling expected

The High Court in Johannesburg is expected to deliver its judgment today in the application for an interdict by the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) against Black First Land First (BLF).

Sanef wants the court to prevent BLF from harassing or threatening journalists.

This comes after several tweets and statements from the BLF targeting several journalists reporting on state capture.

Arguments in the matter were heard yesterday.

BLF claims it has every right to protest, but Sanef's lawyers stated that BLF was infringing on journalists' right to report and their freedom of movement.

They also added that since police failed to protect journalists, it's now up to the court to intervene.

Sanef's chairperson Mahlatse Gallens says they are confident the court were rule in their favour.

"Our attorneys were able to demonstrate that what happened last week was Peter Bruce's house was a criminal act. They invaded his home. If people have issues with what people are writing, they must go to the media houses and go protest there and ask the police for permission," says Gallens.

BLF's Andile Mngxitama says a court interdict will not stop them from protesting against white journalists, whom they believe to be racist.

"As BLF we do not have any trust in any white person. Will the judge be fair to us. When have white people been fair to black people?" asks Mngxitama.
