SAMA probes allegations of medical students paying for intern placement
The South African Medical Association has launched a probe into claims some medical interns have been paying to swap hospital positions.
The allegations were published in the Weekend Argus.
The report alleges medical students are willing to pay up to R100 000 for internships at preferred hospitals and that bartering occurs on social media platforms.
It's understood KZN, the Western Cape and Gauteng are among the most sought after locations.

Chairperson of SAMA, Angelique Coetzee says such a practice would be unethical, unfair, and would go against the grain of what the medical profession stands for.
"The reason why we are very worried about this is that the selling of placements is a form of corruption because it's unethical and unfair. As not all doctors have the means or the money to do this.
