Salga wants poor-performing municipalities held accountable
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Local Government Association (Salga) has called for decisive action to hold poor-performing municipalities accountable.

But it says the increase in the number of those that have received clean audits in the last financial year inspires hope.
Salga's welcomed the auditor-general's report on local government for the 2020/2021 financial year with a pinch of disappointment.
Highlighting deteriorating governance as a major concern, it says it's clear that many municipalities require serious and urgent intervention.
More than a quarter of the country's municipalities are on the brink of financial collapse.

Salga's Khomotso Letsatsi says only 41 municipalities received clean audits, including Okhahlamba in the KZN Midlands.
"Salga would like to commend the 141 municipalities that have archived unqualified audit results in 2021 financial year.
"And further, more to indicate Salga would like to highlight that these 141 municipalities account for 73 percent of the total municipal budget translating into R371 billion which is gaunt the total of R508 billion."
