SAHRC warns of water mafia sabotaging infrastructure
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Human Rights Commission has raised the alarm over what it calls the sabotage of the country’s water infrastructure.

It’s published a policy brief warning government about criminal groups known as water mafias who are allegedly behind attacks on key infrastructure.
Last month, a group believed to be linked to one of these syndicates blocked municipal workers from reaching a Chatsworth reservoir, disrupting supply to several communities.

In the Eastern Cape, humanitarian workers from the Gift of the Givers were threatened, while delivering clean water to flood-hit residents.
The SAHRC’s Wisani Baloyi says access to clean water is under serious threat.
" The commission is calling for the Office of the President to proclaim and promulgate the remainder of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act 8, that the deliberate support of water services, and infrastructure be considered as a constitutional crime.”
