SAHRC hearings into July unrest set to start in November
The South African Human Rights Commission will start its probe into the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng on 15 November.
The hearings are expected to last until 3 December.
The hearings will mark the start of the investigation into the causes of the unrest in the two provinces that lead to the deaths of more than 330 people and billions of rands lost.
The commission briefed the media on Friday.
"Many theories were advanced on the causes of the unrest,” said the commission’s chairperson Bongani Majola.
“However, what is important is that the period of the unrest witnessed massive violations of human rights in the country. Our rights appear to have been broken and defeated and our law enforcement agencies appeared to have suffered unexplained paralysis.
"The commission seeks to investigate the causes of the unrest, assess its impact on human rights. The investigation panel will inquire, make findings, report, and make recommendations or directives concerning all issues.”
The commission has invited anyone with information that could assist the panel in its probe to make submissions.
