Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
Members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) gathered at the King Dinuzulu Park in Durban on Friday for a march to City Hall.
The teacher union is protesting several issues it says are compromising teaching and learning at schools.
"Part of those is the issue of the timeous appointment of teachers, security guards - with the violence and crime that we are seeing on our schools," says SADTU provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza.
"The appointment of school classes, because if schools are to perform principals and teachers must just focus on their classroom work and not be taken by administrative duties as we see in the majority of schools.
"We are also saying the government must attend to the Grade R conditions of service as we know their qualifications are not recognised."
The eThekwini Metro Police Department says there a no road closures for the march.
