More than 4000 Teachers left their classrooms yesterday to march to Durban’s City Hall.  They want the department to stop dragging its heels and fill vacant posts.

They’re also calling for a decent pay for teachers.

The union’s Nomarashiya Caluza says many of them are forced to work in conditions that aren’t conducive for learning - including poor infrastructure and a lack of resources.

She says if the department fails to respond to their memorandum, they will escalate their concerns.

"The Department of Education in KZN has failed to fill vacancies thus running their entire department with skeleton staff. Critical positions of senior managers remain unfilled," she says.
