SADTU ready to sit-down with Motshekga

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) says it's looking forward to fruitful discussions with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga this week.

The meeting follows the union's call for schools to close and reopen after the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak.

But SADTU says teaching and learning should still take place on online platforms and via radio.

The group's national executive committee has been discussing the recent spike of infections in schools.

"One is that we need co-coordinated radio lessons by teachers. This would reach more learners in the far-flung areas in rural communities.

"Some of these particular lessons should be interactive and instruction based on radio lessons," says General Secretary, Mugwena Maluleke.

"We also call for the television programmes which are well-coordinated and supported by the teachers and the learners. We also call for the use of mobile phones to access content and curriculum material."

Basic Education's Council of Education Ministers says schools need to be given a chance to adjust to the new normal under COVID-19.

It says it's concerned about teachers and other groups attacking the government for going back to work.

SADTU's asked its members to continue going to school until the Minister makes a decision on the way forward.
