Sadtu gives KZN govt 7 days to respond to demands

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has given the KwaZulu-Natal government seven days to respond to its demands.

Teachers held pickets outside the legislature office in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday to highlight the challenges over unfilled vacancies and some unpaid salaries.
Among other things, SADTU wants Treasury to revisit the R6.3million education budget cut.

The union's Nomarashiya Caluza says it's affected payments to temporary teachers.
"In a provincial government and department of finance in particular have the responsibility to afford all learners in our schools quality pubic education and to progressively archive equity in resource distribution by being sensitive and responsive to existing inequalities."
Premier Sihle Zikalala accepted the memorandum from the KZN teachers.
"We will be engaging through MEC Dube-Ncube and MEC Mshengu with national Treasury on issues you have raised."

"We are going to take up those issues, but equally through provincial, we will sit and look at what we can do to address issues that you have raised."
