The SACP's Blade Nzimande says they want Parliament to examine Busisiwe Mkhwebane's fitness to hold office.

"Unfortunately, the office of the Public Protector increasingly - instead of being preoccupied defending the poor and vulnerable - has become an instrument of the better off in society to fight political and other battles."

Nzimande briefed the media in Johannesburg yesterday.

He says they're worried about the recent court judgments against Mkhwebane.

They believe her office is being used as a tool to fight political battles.

"The SACP is seriously concerned about the constant scathing court judgements. The SACP therefore believes that it is imperative for Parliament to carry out a fair and impartial inquiry into her suitability to hold office."

Among other things, the public protector's come under fire for her report into Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, which found that he acted improperly by approving an early retirement payment for former SARS commissioner Ivan Pillay.

Gordhan is taking the matter on review.
