It comes after the embattled SABC confirmed its continuation with the Section 189 process and the issuing of notices to more than 300 employees.

Bemawu president Hannes du Buisson says unions will discuss a way forward.

“We have set up a meeting with our labour partner at the SABC, it is set for 11:00 this morning, the agenda for that meeting is a letter to the SABC to call them to sit around the table with us to discuss the section 189 process and our concerns with regard to that process.

We have to meet with them as soon as possible because they started to implement the structure which we believe we haven’t had a proper opportunity to make inputs on, we have wanted to discuss issues like the fact that some of the people only received redundancy letters yesterday and cannot have time to plan,” says du Buisson.

He says the unions will go ahead with the strike if the SABC does not reply.

“The second agenda is to proceed with the strike should we not receive a response on that letter, we have been writing to the SABC board weeks ago, where we ask for an urgent meeting and also asked some questions but we have not received a reply and if the mandate of the meeting is to proceed with the strike, then that is what will happen.”
