Ngubane is currently appearing before Parliament's inquiry into the board's fitness to hold office. The embattled SABC board is in the spotlight as Members of Parliament probe its fitness to hold office.

Together with former board chair, Ellen Tshabalala - they are the final witnesses to appear before the committee.

He was asked about Hlaudi Motsoeneng's salary increase.

Ngubane defended the increase - saying the former COO was employed for his skills, and not his qualifications. He says the Public Protector's report - where it was revealed that Motoseneng received a 63% increase - is not damning to him personally.

"This report is created out of statements that I was not asked to corroborate. Now if someone gives information, and the person being accused is not given a chance to respond to that - let me put it to you. SABC salaries are normally very high. There was a series of adjustments to salaries, but all within the parameters of salaries at SABC," he said.

Earlier, Ngubane told the board he's not sure why he was summoned before the committee

"I have difficulty in contextualising the purpose of calling me here. I came because I have served in Parliament for ten years and I respect Parliament. I came here because the issues being discussed were of national importance," he said.
