Updated | By Newswatch
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says 17 710 new cases were confirmed in the past day.
The NICD says the jump in infections is due to more testing, with the results of some of the specimens that were collected over the past week having been delayed over the Christmas weekend.
It's warned infections may rise further after the festive season.
