SA ranks amongst 40 driest countries globally

South Africa remains one of the driest countries in the world.

This, according to Sputnik Ratau, who is with the Department of Water and Sanitation. 


"South Africa is still in a drought situation. The country is still one of the 40 driest in the world," he said.


The degree to which countries are determined as 'dry' is done in terms of water scarcity, or average rainfall per year.

Ratau says the recent rains have boosted the country's dam levels however KZN and the Eastern Cape have been severely affected by the drought. 


"The recent rains that we have seen in the larger part of the country have primarily had a positive impact on the dam levels, where we are now on a national scale at about 73.9% - whereas we were at about 53.6% last year," he said.

Ratau says, however, that they still remain concerned about KZN - and the fluctuating dam levels in this province. 


Umgeni Water appeared before Parliament yesterday - where it tabled its annual 2015/2016 report on water supply & drought interventions.
