SA needs to produce own medicine – Nzimande

Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande says South Africa producing its own medicine is vital to the national response to outbreaks.
He gave the keynote address at the inauguration of the South African Isotope Facility in Cape Town on Friday.

The facility will conduct advanced research and training and increase production capacity for radioisotopes, which are used in treating cancer.
"One of the things I would like us to do in this country whilst I am still minister for the next ten months or so - we will not do it in ten months, but, if we can lay a foundation is the development of a multi-disciplinary programme for the study of pandemics."
