SA needs independent unit to deal with drug crimes - expert

A violence monitoring expert says she believes the country needs an independent, organised crime unit to deal with drug syndicates.
Mary de Haas’ comments come after Police Minister Bheki Cele confirmed that one of the alleged drug bosses, who was killed in Durban this weekend, was the son of a former policeman.
Five suspected drug dealers were killed in a shootout with police in Morningside over the weekend.

They were allegedly linked to a drive-by shooting where an alleged drug dealer, his wife and daughter were killed in Springfield Park last month.
De Haas says the country needs an independent organisation that can deal with these types of cases.
"It is the only way to deal with organised crime. The police can't deal with it."
