Five suspected drug dealers shot dead by cops in Durban

Five suspected drug dealers have been killed in a shootout with police in Durban.

The gun battle followed the arrest of one suspect on Saturday morning. 


Police say it is anti-gang unit were searching for suspects linked to a to a drive-by shooting incident that occurred in Durban's Springfield Park in March.


A known drug lord, his wife and their nine-year-old daughter were killed during that incident.


"Following the arrest of the suspect who is currently in police custody, further investigation led the team to an identified premises in Morningside, Durban where five other suspected drug dealers were shot and killed during a shoot-out with the police’s anti-gang unit," said KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.


Netshiunda said the vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime was spotted in Hillcrest on Saturday.


"Five firearms including three rifle’s and two pistols, money and drugs worth an undisclosed amount of money have been seized by police."


Police Minister Bheki Cele said this incident should send a stern warning to all criminals. 


"Well done to all involved, we have been having a challenge of shootings and drug related crimes in KZN and these suspects are believed to be part of the syndicate who have been operating in Durban and surrounding areas."


The arrested suspect will likely face charges of possession of drugs, illegal possession of firearms and possession of a stolen vehicle.
