Crime Stats: SA murder rate up by 2.2%

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the second highest number of murders in the country during the last financial year.

4014 murders were reported in the province during that period.


It's  a 2.2% increase from the previous year. 


Acting National Police Commissioner, Lesetja Mothiba says there are a number of factors that influenced the murder rate in the province.


"In KZN, 1.9% of the reported murder cases were linked to taxi violence. While this reportedly claimed the lives of 82 individuals in Gauteng. Furthermore, hostel violence was also identified as a generator of murder in KZN with 0.6% of the murders attributed to this phenomenon," he says.

Gauteng was the province with the highest number of murders in the country - with four-thousand-101 people killed - an increase of 6.7%. 


Mothiba says many murders in Gauteng are linked to illegal mining.


The number of murders in South Africa increased to 19 016 cases.
