SA Breweries to challenge gov in court over ban of alcohol sales

SA Breweries says it's going to challenge the constitutionality to prohibit alcohol trading again, in the interest of saving jobs and protecting livelihoods.
Sales are not permitted under the current lockdown level 3 regulations.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said in December that the excessive consumption of alcohol had been driving up the number of trauma cases in hospitals.
He met with the National Coronavirus Command Council yesterday, to discuss the country's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
SA Breweries said in a statement that the ban last year affected 165 000 jobs.

100 000 people are now living in poverty.
It believes the current restriction will fuel illegal trading and looting.
The group says taverns should be allowed to trade for off-site consumption and formal traders given new hours of operation.
Meanwhile, The SA Liquor Brandowners' Association is warning consumers about the dangers of buying counterfeit alcohol.
It suspects counterfeit liquor is being manufactured and sold in KZN.
The country's adhering to lockdown level 3 regulations, which include a complete ban on alcohol sales.
SALBA says it grew when armed robbers stole thousands of bottle caps from a production facility in Durban.
The Association's Sibani Mngadi says refilling used and branded bottles with counterfeit alcohol is a common practice.
