SA airlines projected to suffer R55 bn loss amid COVID-19 pandemic

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to batter the aviation sector across the globe – it is projected that airlines in South Africa will suffer a R55 billion loss in revenue.

That's according to global airline body - the International Air Transport Association (IATA).  


It says this is a 56% income decline compared to 2019. 


Major airlines around the world have been announcing cuts to their staff in a bid to keep flying. 


IATA's Katherine Kaczynska says it won't be any different for airlines in South Africa with 252 100 on the line. 


"IATA, the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) and the Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa (BARSA) - are calling on the South African government to provide specific financial relief to the aviation sector to address the severe impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

"Aviation is vital for connecting markets and moving people and good between them. Recovery post-COVID-19 will be drawn out and painful, fully supporting aviation now is critical if the economy is to expand."
