The city's looking at ways to boost safety on the roads following a spate of rock throwing incidents - one of which claimed the lives of two children.

"We are very concerned that these incidents are increasing and we want to reassure the public that the municipality is acting very fast to find a solution," deputy Mayor, Fawzia Peer says.

Peer says they're looking at the possibility of installing safety barriers over bridges.

"From my committee, we have to look at placing some surveillance cameras there and that has to be done as soon as possible," she says.

Peer says they were told that the roll-out will take some time but they are going to try and speed up the process saying the issue needs to be dealt with urgently.

SAPS spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele has again asked community members or witnesses who have information to please come forward.

"This week, there is a meeting that has been planned by Umhlali police with security guards so that they will discuss their strategy in order to curb these incidents. Patrols are taking place at those two bridges as police cannot be stuck at one bridge," she says.
