Proceedings at the Amanzimtoti Magistrates Court were delayed for most of the morning as the state made its way through a lengthy charge sheet.

The 42-year-old was then brought up to the dock by a police officer.

With a blank stare, he seemed despondent when asked if he understood his rights before letting the court know that he intended to apply for bail.

The state will oppose the application.

Outside court, a close friend of the victim, Rina de Goede, says it was difficult to see the accused.

De Jager will appear in court again on 7 December.
