This comes after the ANC extended its last National Executive Committee meeting for the year

The meeting was meant to wrap up yesterday - however the ruling party's top structure extended its last meeting of the year into today and the agenda is to look at the party's leadership.

Somadoda Fikeni says if the ANC's NEC votes today it will be a historic motion of no confidence from within the organisation.

Fikeni says we shouldn't underestimate the debate underway.

"For a long while, I do think that the ANC leadership has avoided addressing these issues and now emboldened by the veterans as well as also being concerned that the president was drifting apart from the party and from the cabinet in his pronouncements," he said.

Fikeni adds however that any recall is unlikely at this stage.

"It's unlikely that you would have a recall at this moment in such a dramatic way but I do think that emerging from this clear-up programme of action - this will likely going to constrain his power," he said.
