Residents frustrated as Umlazi, KwaMashu refuse collection halted

Umlazi and KwaMashu residents say their streets are strewn with rubbish and litter as refuse hasn't been collected by municipal contractors again.

Umlazi resident, Given Mhlongo says there's a constant bad smell hanging in the air.
He says it's been weeks since the last refuse collection took place.
Mhlongo adds it's close to ten days of waiting for waste collection and litter is still seen lying on the streets in the township, south of Durban.

eThekwini Municipality says refuse collection has been affected - as contractors are on strike.
The municipality's Mandla Nsele says they've had to make alternative collection plans.
"As an interim measure - the municipality will be utilising internal reources to ensure in the affected areas. We would like to ensure that we are working around the clock to ensure we are clearing the service backlog," Mlongo said.
