Reservoir Hills residents oppose construction of cellphone tower
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Irate Reservoir Hills residents are opposing the construction of a cell phone mast in Dolphin Avenue.
"If I look out of my window right now - that mast will be 15-metres away. If I look at the neighbouring properties, it's going to be within ten-metres of that. Our big concern is that we don't know what the long-term effects of this mast is going to be." The Dolphin Avenue Residents Association's Danjay Deonarain said.
They're calling on eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede to step in and put a stop to the project.
Members of the association says they're concerned about the potential long-term impact on their health as well as property values in the area. Concerned residents picketed on Sunday to raise awareness around their fight.
Deonarain says the mast - which is already partly constructed - is situated close to homes, schools and an old age home.
"Our message to the municipality is that we believe this entire process was flawed and that we asked our mayor to step in. We believe that ultimately, she has accountability for all of the employees within the municipality. We have asked her to step in and play an oversite role in this - to look at the decision that was made and look at the objections put forward," Deonarain said.

Meanwhile, eThekwini says it's not in a position to comment, saying it will wait for the outcome of court proceedings over the construction of cell phone towers in the city before communicating on the matter.
The municipality says it respects the rights of residents to protest or picket.
