The city has aside R1.6 million to transport, accommodate and cater for 6000 Durban maidens taking part in the Reed Dance in Nongoma next we

Around half a million rand of the money will pay for two carpets that will be placed inside marquees for the maidens to sleep on.

DA caucus leader in the municipality, Zwakele Mncwango says this cost doesn't make sense.

"We will not support the looting of public funds using the Reed Dance. There's no way we can support a municipality led by Zandile Gumede - proposing that the municipality must spend R1.6-million on this event," he says.

Spokesperson for the mayor, Mthunzi Gumede says the money has been budgeted for and approved.

"That amount will cover all the costs of the event - if there is anyone who has something to raise should approach the relevant departments," he says.
