eThekwini Municipality says it will foot the bill for 6000 maidens who will be taking part in the reed dance.
The R1.6 million funding was approved by council for the transport, accommodation and catering costs of the maidens.
Mayor Zandile Gumede says the assistance will help ensure the maidens comfort and safety while attending the Reed Dance.
She says plans are in place to build a permanent structure to house maidens in KwaNongoma to reduce costs.
Meanwhile, Arts and Culture spokesperson Mac Makhathini says preparations for the event are going well.
The Reed Dance takes place at the eNyokeni Royal Palace in KwaNongoma from the 7- 10 September.
